Sankofa Parent Portal Privacy Policy

Sankofa Freedom Academy Charter School ("Sankofa," "we," "our," or "the School") is committed to protecting the privacy and security of information associated with parents, guardians, and students.

This Privacy Policy explains how information is handled in connection with the Sankofa PowerSchool Parent Portal and the optional Google Sign-In functionality provided for Parent Portal authentication.

 

Information Received Through Google Sign-In

When a parent or guardian chooses to access the PowerSchool Parent Portal using Google Sign-In, information necessary to authenticate the user may be received from Google.

Depending on the authentication configuration, this may include:

  • Email address

  • Google account identifier

  • Basic authentication information necessary to verify the user's identity

Sankofa requests only the Google account information necessary to authenticate the user and associate the authenticated identity with the appropriate PowerSchool Parent Portal account.

 

How We Use Google User Data

Information received through Google Sign-In is used to:

  • Authenticate the identity of the parent or guardian;

  • Match the authenticated user with an authorized PowerSchool Parent Portal account;

  • Facilitate secure access to the Parent Portal; and

  • Maintain the security and integrity of the authentication process.

Google user data obtained through Google Sign-In is not used for advertising or marketing purposes.

 

Google Services We Do Not Access

The Google Sign-In integration used for the Sankofa Parent Portal is intended for authentication purposes.

Sankofa does not use this integration to access the contents of a user's:

  • Gmail messages;

  • Google Drive files;

  • Google Photos;

  • Google Calendar;

  • Google Contacts; or

  • Other Google services not required for authentication.

 

Sharing of Information

Sankofa does not sell Google user data.

Information may be processed by service providers involved in providing the Parent Portal and authentication services, including PowerSchool and Google, as necessary to provide their respective services and subject to applicable agreements, privacy requirements, and law.

Information may also be disclosed when required by law or when necessary to protect the security, rights, or safety of students, families, the School, or others.

 

Student Education Records

The PowerSchool Parent Portal may provide authorized parents and guardians access to student education records maintained by Sankofa.

Student education records are handled in accordance with applicable federal and state laws and School policies, including the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).

Google authentication does not independently authorize access to a student's records. Access is dependent upon the user's authorization within Sankofa's student information system.

 

Data Security

Sankofa takes reasonable administrative and technical measures to protect information associated with Parent Portal access.

Parents and guardians are also responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of their account credentials and for securing the Google or other account used to authenticate to the Parent Portal.

 

Revoking Google Sign-In Access

Users may review or revoke application access through their Google Account settings.

Revoking authorization may prevent the user from using Google Sign-In to access the Sankofa Parent Portal. Other Parent Portal authentication methods may be available.

 

Data Retention

Information associated with Parent Portal accounts and student records is retained in accordance with applicable legal requirements, School policies, and the operational requirements of Sankofa's student information systems.

Authentication-related information is retained only as necessary to provide, administer, secure, or document access to the Parent Portal, subject to applicable requirements.

 

Children's Privacy

The Google Sign-In functionality described in this policy is intended to authenticate parents and guardians accessing the Parent Portal.

Student information accessible through the Parent Portal is protected in accordance with applicable education privacy laws and School policies.

 

Changes to This Privacy Policy

Sankofa may update this Privacy Policy periodically to reflect changes in technology, authentication services, legal requirements, or School practices.

The date at the top of this page indicates when this Privacy Policy was last updated.
